First Ever Dog Agility Competition 1978

First Dog Agility Trial Ever! 🐕‍🦺

First Ever Dog Agility at Crufts, England 1978

The video here shows the first ever Dog Agility Trial anywhere in the world. It was invented in Crufts England.

Gazing at a vacant ring at a canine show is exhausting. Coordinators of the Crufts Dog Show in England realized that. So in 1977 John Varley set out to make an alternate exhibit to occupy the time between the obedience and the start of the beauty show group judging

In any case, Varley understood how stallions could demonstrate jumping more than about preparing canines ro run a course. So he reached out to Peter Meanwell, a dog trainer. Mr. Meanwell's task was to make a pooch safe, observer-friendly demo that could be performed on Olympia's hard floor.

Meanwell he enrolled companions Stuart Gillam, Kevin Foster, Albert Davies, Trevor Jones, and Fred Welham to help manufacture gear for the demo.

Involvement in working trials, which are like Schutzhund, helped Meanwell and his companions shape the essentials of the first ever canine hopping occasion.

Before long, Meanwell got the idea the demo would be more alluring to onlookers if it had a game like feel with winners and losers.

Because training and experience met with opportunity, Peter Meanwell and his dog, WT Ch. Jamie of Petricas, won with a clean round.
